Amesbury, MA – The 34th Annual Meeting of the Amesbury Carriage Museum will be held on Monday, September 16 at Ristorante Molise in downtown Amesbury at 1 Market Square. Doors will open at 5:30 pm followed by dinner and a program featuring guest speaker Dr. Elizabeth DeWolfe, professor of history at the University of New England. There is a nominal fee for the dinner and pre-registration by September 9 is requested.
Dr. DeWolfe will present her program – Women’s Work in the Mills: Lessons from our Industrial Past. This illustrated program will explore the nature of work life in the 19th-century New England textile mills with a particular emphasis on the experience of young women in this new industrial environment. DeWolfe will explore how this emerging industrial system shaped and defined nearby communities and will conclude with some thoughts on how the experience of women in the 19th century has meaning and relevance in our world today. “This program is extremely timely,” says John Mayer, ACM Executive Director, “Beth will show how the study of the past informs our sense of community today. We are delighted to have her on the program.”
Dr. Elizabeth DeWolfe is professor of history at the University of New England in Biddeford, Maine. She teaches undergraduate courses in women’s history, in American culture, and on historical research and writing. Her books have received awards from the New England Historical Association, Northeast Popular Culture Association, and the Independent Publisher Book Awards. Her research projects have been supported by fellowships from the National Endowment for the Humanities, the Kentucky Historical Society, and the Pew Program in Religion and History.
In addition, the Annual Meeting is a time for Carriage Museum leadership to celebrate recent accomplishments and to present plans for the coming year. New Board members will be introduced as well. There is a small fee to cover the cost for dinner of $40 per person for non-members, and $35 for ACM members.
